2011 Audi A8

U.S. customers will have to wait until late this year to drive the new-generation Audi A8 unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. Internally named the D4, the new A8 features a complete redesign—Audi says the car will introduce “a whole new level of refinement and innovation.” Sounds like it could be worth the wait.

Besides bold new styling, the all-aluminum A8 is also more than 3 in. longer, over 2 in. wider and 0.6 in. taller than the current model. The wheelbase has also been increased by about 2 in. (now at 117.8 in.), giving more cabin room and an even better weight distribution. Despite the extra size, the refined 2011 A8 only weighs between 77 and 110 lb. more than the previous version. Still need more room? A longer wheelbase version, with an extra 5 in., will be available as well.

Inside, wood, leather and fine plastics form an elegant and luxurious cabin—there is plenty of space both in front and in back. An optional touch pad on the center console allows menu commands by “writing” letters with one finger. The new A8 also has an updated MMI interface with an upgraded navigation system. Moreover, one can order a night vision system, which includes pedestrian identification.

The first U.S.-specification Audi A8s will be powered by a 372-bhp 4.2 FSI V-8, followed later by a W-12 powerplant. Both versions will come standard with a new 8-speed automatic transmission, adaptive air suspension and Quattro all-wheel drive.

The Europeans will get the 4.2 gasoline V-8 as well as two turbodiesel alternatives—a 4.2 TDI V-8 with 350 bhp and a 3.0 TDI V-6 with 250 bhp. Later, the European A8 will be available with front-wheel drive mated to a 204-bhp diesel, which Audi says will achieve 47 mpg. In 2011, Audi will add a 4-cylinder turbo as well as a full hybrid with lithium-ion batteries. U.S. prices for the 2011 Audi A8 are expected to be slightly higher than the current car’s, which start at $74,550
