Chevrolet Aveo RS Concept

The Detroit Auto Show served as the world debut of the Chevrolet Aveo RS show car. But the Boracay Blue RS is more than that: Chevy says the Aveo RS’s styling “hints at the next-generation Aveo.”

The Aveo RS is longer, wider and offers more interior room than the current Aveo subcompact. Besides being larger, the Aveo RS has a far more interesting shape than the current car, accentuated by 19-in. 5-spoke alloy wheels that are housed perfectly by the aggressive fender flares. Other neat design features include fog lamps integrated into front brake cooling ducts and rear passenger doorhandles that are hidden in the C-pillars, making the Aveo RS look like a 3-door hatchback from certain angles, not the 5-passenger 5-door hatch it actually is.

But the Aveo RS show car is more than just a styling exercise. The fitment of the same 1.4-liter turbocharged Ecotec 4-cylinder engine that will be available in the upcoming (and larger) Chevy Cruze proves the new Aveo has power to accompany its looks. This dohc engine, equipped with variable valve timing, delivers an estimated 138 bhp to the front wheels and comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The car’s dual-outlet center-mount exhaust and large, bright blue brake calipers give notice that the Aveo RS is intended for far greater driving duties than merely commuting.

The sporty theme continues inside the Aveo RS, where you’ll find bolstered front seats and plenty of blue accent stitching on the instrument panel, door inserts, steering wheel, shifter boot and parking brake handle.

The next-generation Chevrolet Aveo will be built at the Orion Assembly plant in Michigan in 2011. There’s no word yet as to the reality of an Aveo RS production model, but a Chevy official did say the show car “presents the many personalization options potentially available on the next-generation car.”
