Cadillac XTS Platinum Concept

The most surprising thing about this Cadillac is that it’s a plug-in hybrid. Yeah, it’s still a concept, but don’t be surprised to see a production version of the XTS as a possible replacement for the DTS or STS. For now, though, let’s just ponder the possibility of this large plug-in hybrid sedan.

The production 3.6-liter V-6 is mated to a hybrid drive system. The 2-mode system isn’t mentioned, but it’s the likely choice. It would provide pure electric propulsion to all four wheels up to a relatively high speed, allowing city drives in pure electric mode. In typical hybrid fashion, however, if the battery gets depleted, or if more power is necessary, the V-6 will kick in and contribute to a combined power output of 350 bhp and 290 lb.-ft. of torque. The battery pack is lithium-ion, but it’s not clear where it would be located in the car. If it’s of substantial size, expect the trunk space to be hindered.

The XTS Platinum is said to showcase the next step in Cadillac’s Art and Science design language while highlighting the Platinum series of extravagant and luxurious models. Cadillac says a production version of this XTS would feature new technology that would help make this sedan a “personal headquarters, built for efficiency, luxury and connectivity.” The Organic Light Emitting Diode screens replace gauge clusters, as on many other cars at Detroit. The retracting navigation screen seems like standard fare on all new Cadillacs, while the hand-stitched leather seats of this concept probably won’t be.

Making sure this large all-wheel-drive sedan rides smoothly is the Magnetic Ride Control system that adjusts shock absorber damping to suit road conditions. Most notable about this concept is Cadillac’s choice of a V-6 instead of a V-8. Nevertheless, it’s good to see the Lexus hybrids being challenged with American ingenuity.
